Battlefield: Bad Company 2 PC 5 days in

I have had this game about a week now and I can honestly say this is the most fun I’ve had playing a FPS in a long time.  I was fairly hesitant to play this game mainly because of the fact the first one wasn’t that good and I was afraid that the second one was going to be a crappy PC port.  I can say that after playing the game for a week all my fears have been put to rest.  The game plays very similar to MW2 in the fact that as you progress through the multi-player you slowly level up and as you level up you get more weapons, items, perks and achievements.  This is where a lot of the similarities end however.  BC2 is purely team based.  There is no free for all mode at the moment.  There are 4 different types of game modes within the game rush, squad rush, squad death match, conquest.  While this may seem quite limited to the 2 dozen “game modes” that mw2 offers you will find you will be getting bored.   One of the biggest things that sticks out to me was the size of the maps.  Unlike MW2’s  “rat race” maps which are fairly small BC2’s maps are huge.  I don’t use this term loosly either.
The Good:
The graphics are top notch, every thing from the tree’s, snow, buildings, vehicles, and infantry look amazing.  A large amount of detail has been put into the feel and detail of the game.  Tying into the graphics, is the destruction, buildings are completely destructible and collapsible.  For example if there are 4 guys in the top of the building gunning your men down as they charge up the stairs… no problem… go outside, load your grenade launcher and shoot the roof and bam there a huge hole in the roof.  This particular feature of the game means the map will never look the same twice.  All the pristine untouched buildings at the beginning of the map are general heavily damaged or destroyed by the end.  This also means that you have to adapt to ever changing battlefield conditions.  No longer can you hide in a corner and expect to be safe… someone and easily RPG the side of the building your camping at and blow you sky high along with the wall surrounding it.
The sound within the game is also amazing.  If you have a good quality sound system or surround sound setup on your PC you are in for a real treat.  The explosions which create a deafening boom within your ears, the clattering of gun fire, sounds of jets flying over, motors, etc.  All add to the overall depth of the game.  You’ll constantly hear soldiers screaming “watch out we got a fucking sniper up there” or “Christ I’ve been hit I need a medic” which all add to the chaotic  feeling of the game.  One of my favorite effects is the deafening effect you get when explosions are going off around you.  If a frag round goes off next to you and you manage not to die you will be deaf as can be and this makes it hard to tell where gunfire and explosions are coming from.
Vehicles are big standout in this game and it really helps bring it a level above the competition.  You can pilot every from tanks, ATVs, helicopters, and boats.  All of these vehicles can have multiple people driving them.  With the helicopter you can have your pilot and then you have have 2 guys manning the chain guns on either side.  This really adds a interesting element to the game because you can no longer come up behind someone driving a vehicle you can easily be spotted by the “passenger” of the vehicle.
The feel of the game is also good.  What I mean by this is if you are driving a tank it feels like your driving a tank.  The tanks feel solid and heavy not like a bicycle that can turn on a dime.  ATV speed along at insane speeds but if you get hit by a RPG or a frag grenade you and the ATV are going to go flying.  Teams are separated into squads… squads of 4 guys can work together to achieve objectives, cover each other, etc.  This new way of approaching team play really adds a good dynamic to the game.  When it comes to competitive gaming I think it would be really interesting to see how the game played out having one person coordinating the efforts of an entire team and then on top of that having specific squads doing specific things could be quite intense.   Weapons have realistic accuracy, those of you looking for a run and gun type game are going to be very disappointed.  Hip firing will not get you many kills.  You have to aim down your sights, find ur target and burst fire.  You also have to consider distance in this game.  Bullets have travel time, and gravity affects to boot.  So if you try sniping someone from across the map and your aiming at their head… by the time that bullet gets there your going to be hitting their foot or the ground in front of them.
The Bad:
Damage models in this game are fucked up.  This is something that will most likely be patched in the future so it’s not something that I am worrying about to much but it’s still a major annoyance.  There have been many numerous times where i have shot a frag grenade into a wall a quarter inch from someones face and the wall behind them blows up and they walk away with no damage and then walk away and kill me?  Last I checked a frag grenade is more then enough to kill a man point blank.  I feel MW2 has one up on BC2 in this respect in that most kills only take 2 — 5 shots to kill someone.  While this can be the case in BC2 there have been many times when I’ve knifed, then grenaded and then shot someone and then still manged to die?  Wtf?  Hopefully this issues get patched out in the future.
Friends list definately leaves somthing to be desired.  Again this is most likely going to be fixed by future patches its another source of annoyance.  Adding friends at the moment has to be done while both players are on the main screen.  In all honesty it would be nice to be able to chat with friends from it as well or better yet if you have the steam verision of the game be able to join friends games from the steam menu’s.
Optimatization of this game is another issue.  There is no reason this game should require a quad core processor.  Even with my AMD 9950, 4gb ddr2 cl3 and radeon 4890 I can still spend up to a minute loading a game.  This seems a little long.
The conclusion:
Is this game worth the $50 dollar price of admission.  I give it a hell yes.  It’s been years since I’ve had this much fun with a team shooter.  Tell your wives and girlfriends that you are going to be gone for awhile… because you will be.  Now many people have asked the age old question which game is better Modern Warfare 2 or Bad Company 2.  Well it depends on what you are looking for.  The single player game in MW2 is better.  While both only rank in at about 6 hours a piece.  MW2 has one up on BC2 in this aspect.  When it comes to multi player I believe BC2 dominates MW2 quite handily.  The maps are larger, team play is far more coordinated, and the destruction 2.0 elements are hard to give up once you’ve had them.

need anyone say more? I agree about the friends deal, the friends system has almost been perfected by Stem, why not let us use steam, or a system similar and user friendly. I think also once u register ur e‑mail and pick a user name, u should be able to change it, what if someone is soooo excited to get into the action they misspell the gamer tag they really want (yea, i did that). Besides the clumsy menus and unfriendly registration process the game is TIGHT!!!! Gonna play it right now… : )

I agree with most of what was said in the review. A couple of things I feel that were left out though at least on the XBox side of things. I was on a snowy map of sorts trying to crawl onto a roof top and got caught in between some scaffolding and the roof top. On my screen it showed just the smallest gap, yet here my soldier is walking in the air. I ran into a few places that I could not climb onto and by all right should be able to get there. My only other complaint is that the movement of the soldiers seems a bit slow as well. Overall not a bad game, but for me personally I’ll still be playing mostly MW2.

Unfortunatly there are those amoung us who still choose to play games on old, antique and sometimes very unreliable hardware known as the xbox 😛 For the rest of us who want a quality gaming experience there is the PC 😛

I spent 5 hours playing this game last night with six of my buddies and it’s a freaking blast. I can’t even tell how fast time is going by. My wife is going to kill me if I keep playing this 😛 There are not enough hours in the day to play this game and have a life 😛

Hrm not really the response I thought I would get. I tried to give an honest opinion of a game that is being played and all I get is bagged on for playing on the XBox? Last I checked the name of this site was the GAMERSblog not the PCGAMERSblog. I guess I will keep my opinions to myself about XBox stuff since it’s not wanted here?

I’m just giving you a hard time. I do wish the PC version got the prone option. I’m not really sure why it didn’t get that. I would like to pick up a copy for the Xbox to try it out. What issues have you noticed on the Xbox version? Do you know anyone who has the PS3 version. When were you getting caught on the scaffolding?
I would have to agree on the speed of the soldiers. This is sort of an issues with the PC version as well. They do seem to move a little bit slow for what they are doing. But then i’ve never worn 50lbs or gear either so 😛

DanTaylor, thsoundman can be a bit of a turd sometimes, you kinda have to get used to him, lol 🙂
He wasnt trying to harp on you though, just giving you a hard time cuz hes got an abnormaly large head and is angry with world cuz of it 😉
I have the PC version and its not without its bugs either, but every newly released game has issues to be put up with until they are patched, unfortunately EA’s second patch was a bit broken and forced me to restart a campaign mission cuz it corrupted my save files which seems to be a wide spread issue. other than that the game is effing awsome, great visualls with DX11, funny dialogue and superb online play. seriously couldnt be happier with a game.
