What Happen? What You Say? Someone Set Us Up The Bomb!

For great justice!!! What happen?  What you say?  Someone set us up the bomb! All your base are belong to us! Bad English?  Perhaps… but these phrases have been spoken time and time again over the last two decades and have been used in countless videos, online games and forums across the world.   They have even been used in popular media and games like Half Life and Team Fortress.  You, yourself, are now probably wondering where they originated from.
A side scroller game released in 1989, Zero Wing, is the source for all this.  It has been referred to as one of the worst translated games of all time and with good reason.  If you listen to the actual audio during the game it almost makes no sense.  That being said it’s amazing how a badly translated game can lead mass following of people saying the same thing to each other.  When I used to play Team Fortress (the Half Life mod) I can remember numerous time having that all famous phrase “all your base are belong to us” said to me and saying it to others over and over again.  It’s amazing to think about how such a trivial thing can impact an entire culture and not just in the gaming world.  I’ve heard this used in sports, cooking contests and gaming alike.  It’s amazing to think how far that poorly translated game has spread its terrible English across the gaming industry and beyond.
Without further ado here is the original clip from the game, audio and all, along with a couple other videos that I found extremely amusing and entertaining.  I hope you all enjoy.

This one is my personal favorite and in my opinion is the best out there…

I actually own a copy of Zero Wing. Apart from the Engrish, it’s a pretty fun game.
